Natural deodorants? Organic deodorants? Not all are created equal and certainly, not all are effective – or as effective as Lume. Below are some key differentiators, along with some helpful education about Lume Deodorant. But, be sure to ask yourself if your current natural or organic deodorant can really do everything they say they do.

  1. Clinically proven to provide 72-hour odor control in the hottest place in the country, St. Petersburg, Florida, during the peak of summer. How will we do in your state?
  1. Multi-purpose use for both underarms & private parts. Imagine a head-to-toe odor control confidence that is solved completely, with one product.
  1. Patented – that isn’t easy to do. We do not neutralize or mask odors, like many deodorants or antiperspirants. Lume effectively eliminates odor-causing reactions and leaves you feeling confident, secure and empowered.
  1. Doctor-developed – She witnessed the frustration and understood the need for a product that could benefit both consumers and physicians in controlling odors caused by normal daily activity – finally a natural deodorant that really works!
  1. Baking Soda Free – Dermatologist Recommended. No chemical burns, itchy rashes or skin discoloration. We are rewriting the book on human hygiene, safely. Not all natural deodorants are created equal.
  1. Lightly-scented with Essential Oils – we are not a fragrance oil, odor cover-up. Lume is discrete. You can’t smell us coming, and we will not compete with other fragrances you put on your body. Think of Lume as a natural deodorant that works!
  1. Water-based – Lume washes cleanly out of clothing and off your skin, leaving no wax or greasy residue.
  1. Comprehensive – Equally effective on men, as it is for women. An all-natural deodorant for both men and for women.
  1. We are Free! – Baking soda free, proplylene glycol free, paraben free, formaldehyde forming preservative free, cruelty-free, gluten free and vegan-friendly.

After my two “doubting Thomas” tests, I am now a true believer. I’ve purchased a Propel dispenser for each of my siblings and 87-year-old mother. Each of them are now fans. Next up? A pile of nephews and nieces, ranging in age from 17 up to 42 will get Lume Propel to try. It’s amazing to hear the family feedback from the oldest, compared to those that are going through life’s changes right now. I can assure you this very extroverted family will be spreading the good news about Lume Deodorant

    • Shannon Klingman, MD says:

I heard an interview on WCCO Radio today. I had no idea odor gets trapped in your clothing. Just placed my order!!

    • Shannon Klingman, MD says:

Yes it is true! Waxes and oils in traditional antiperspirants and oil and solid butter based natural deodorants bind to man made fabrics in your clothes. They can discolor fabrics, but most bothersome is the residual BO that remains in your clothing. We have a trick for keeping that at bay on our blog, “Why Deodorants Fail”. You can pretreat your older clothing to get your clothes ready while you are waiting for your Lumē order to arrive.

    • Shannon Klingman, MD says:

Lumē is sold directly from our website at this time. I hope you give Lumē a try! It really is a superior aluminum-free deodorant for so many reasons.

  5. Lisa says:

If the product “takes a few days” to “build up” and you can use it less often because of this… does it wash off the body? What exactly IS the folicles and skin absorbing to make the product alter your natural body function? Is this really safe?

    • Shannon Klingman, MD says:

Hi Lisa, Thank you for your question! Our skin cells are continually sloughing off and in our hair follicles, we have a lot of bacteria and dead skin cells that live in the nooks and crannies of our bodies. Lume’s formula helps to exfoliate those dead skins cells (that bacteria and bodily fluids accumulate around), eliminates the bacteria’s ability to digest bodily fluids and limits the cellular replication rate of bacteria themselves. As you begin using Lume, you likely have other products that either contain aluminum or butters and waxes that have built up on your skin. Lume is most effective when it is applied directly to the skin without a wax layer or baking soda and oil combo that remains behind from old products. Once you begin using Lume, you will begin to notice you can use less product less often since you have gotten rid of skin cell debris, old product built up in your hair follicles and sweat glands, and the bacteria have been rendered unable to digest fluids on your skin. Lume doesn’t alter a body function. It is not a drug. Aluminum is a drug since it alters our ability to perspire. Lume is like magic for underarms since it was created for odors found in other parts of our bodies. It’s a whole new approach to odor control. I hope that helps. Shannon Klingman MD

  6. Miranda says:

I see that you have said Lume prevents bacteria from metabolising bodily fluids to create odor. However, I cannot seem to find any explanation of how it does that. I do a lot of reading to educate myself on products and their ingredients-what the function of each chemical is. As I have no formal education in chemistry beyond high school I prefer the scientific explanation to be dumbed down for me just a little bit (more than a scientific research paper). However, it’s not helpful when things are dumbed down to the point of saying “it works like magic.”
Is there any way you could explain in more detail just how the bacteria are unable to metabolize sweat? I would appreciate more education on this from an expert.

    • Shannon Klingman, MD says:

Without giving away trade secrets:) Lume eliminates the ability of digestive enzymes in bacteria to digest bodily fluids that contain certain amino acids and fats.

  7. Samantha Ding says:

Is this product safe for breastfeeding mom? Not sure if I read somewhere that it contains sage essential oil which may cause a reduction in milk supply?

    • Shannon Klingman, MD says:

Clary sage is present at a level less than 1% in our formula which will not have an effect on milk supply.

    • Shannon Klingman, MD says:

Lume is a waterbased cream and once rubbed into your skin, does not leave white marks. The product itself is white, so if you find it is not rubbed in and the product itself gets onto your clothing, it can be wiped right off with a damp cloth. It leaves no residue behind and washes out of clothing. Easy peasy.

  8. Beverly Poulter says:

I just started using my new Lume yesterday. Once it dries, there’s a weird flaky mess! I thought I maybe over applied the first time, so I applied less today with the same result. What am I doing wrong? I really want to love this product!

    • Shannon Klingman, MD says:

Thank you for reaching out so we can get you on your way to magical odor control! If you have flaking, you are applying too much product. Since reformulating Lume to be more heat tolerant in our underarms, we know that we are now even more effective and a little goes a longer way! For the propel cream stick, elevate up until flush with the holes at the top or a few dots just a smidge over. Swipe your pit with the applicator and rub it in with your fingertips until just clear, and then stop. This is a very important step. It should dry quickly and be very soft. For the tube, apply a small pea sized amount and apply the same way.

  9. Shannon Klingman, MD says:

If you are noticing Lume works some days better than others, it is most likely your clothing. I know it is hard to believe, but oil and wax based or aluminum based products esspecially bind to fibers in our clothing and are tough to wash out. That is why we recommend an enzyme spray before you throw it in the hamper to get to work on breaking that down and improving your odor free interval.
