Synthetic Fragrance In My Deodorant?
by Sarah Thomas
Okay, I know what you might be thinking. "Synthetic? No thanks! I'm all about natural, baby!" And trust me, we get it. The allure of natural essential oils is strong. They smell amazing and come straight from Mother Earth. What's not to love?
While essential oils have many great uses, when Lume was interested in branching out to retail spaces, we talked to major retailers and learned that natural fragrances aren’t safer or cleaner. So, Lume switched to using synthetic fragrances to comply with clean beauty standards.
That bears repeating. We had to switch to synthetic fragrances to be considered a “clean” brand.
Here's why synthetic fragrance helps us create your perfect Lume experience:
Consistency
Synthetic fragrances allow us to create that perfect Vanilla Bliss, that just right Peony Rose, every single time. No batch-to-batch variations based on a fickle growing season. You know exactly what you're getting, and you can count on that familiar, beloved scent.
Expanding the Options
Synthetic fragrance opens up a whole new world of scent possibilities! Imagine trying to extract the true scent of that crisp alpine air or a freshwater element directly from nature. It's just not feasible. Our fragrance experts can capture those evocative and nuanced aromas, giving us a much wider and more exciting scent palette to play with.
Gentle on Your Skin
Just because something is "natural" doesn't automatically mean it's gentle. Some essential oils can be irritating to sensitive skin. Synthetic fragrances allow us to carefully control the ingredients and create scents that are less likely to contain allergens or cause reactions.
Gentle On The Planet
Relying solely on essential oils puts a huge strain on natural resources. Creating synthetic versions in a lab can be a more sustainable option. It takes many pounds of plant material to extract a very small amount of oil. It also takes many months and a lot of land and water to grow the plants.
Making Scents Last Longer
Although Lume Deodorant doesn’t rely on scent to mask or cover up odor, we heard from a lot of you that you like to smell your deodorant throughout the day. Essential oils evaporate quickly after application, and many don’t have a lasting scent. In contrast, synthetic fragrances can hold their scent for longer, giving you that long lasting fragrance you are looking for.
Stability and Shelf Life
Natural fragrances can be more susceptible to degradation and oxidation, impacting their scent and potential for spoilage. Synthetic ingredients can offer greater stability and contribute to a longer shelf life for the product.
It's not about "good" versus "bad;" it's about choosing the best ingredients for the job. Synthetic fragrances offer a level of control, versatility, and sustainability that essential oils simply can't always match for creating effective, consistent, and enjoyable deodorant and body care.
So, the next time you enjoy that amazing scent from your Lume, know that there's some clever science at play, ensuring you get the best possible experience – beautifully scented and confidently fresh, all day long.
