Do Showers Control Body Odor?
by Sarah Thomas
Does anything feel better than a hot shower or bath? Showering is my self-care love language and therapy, and I absolutely love enjoying the luxury of clean, hot water coming at me straight out of the wall.
People take showers or baths for many reasons. Some bathe to relax, decrease stress, or improve sleep and mental clarity. Removing or avoiding body odor is probably at the top of the list, though.
Does Showering Control Odor?
In a word, no. Bathing is effective at giving you a clean slate—but we apply deodorant to our underarms as soon as we towel off because we know that showering alone won’t control body odor.
Odor causing bacteria are relentless and get to work creating odor as soon as we step out of the shower!
Does Showering With Soap Control Odor?
Not only does soap not control odor, but because it has a pH level much higher than that of our skin, washing with high pH soap or body wash can strip our skin of oils that protect and create a barrier that keeps our skin happy.
Soap’s high pH can actually make body odor worse because odor causing bacteria thrive in a high pH environment.
Word on the web is that dermatologists recommend skipping soap altogether in favor of cleansers.
